CLR Fundamentals

2010 is getting off to a great start for the Wellington .NET User Group with a presentation on CLR Fundamentals:

Whether you program in C#, Visual Basic or any other .NET language, the Common Language Runtime is what makes your code go. It’s the common platform which provides all the features we take for granted – memory management, program loading, language independence, and so on. In this talk we’ll review the practical fundamentals of the CLR including:

  • Reference and value types – what, when and why
  • Properties, methods, fields and events
  • Interfaces, delegates, exceptions and fundamental types
  • The Common Type System
  • How programs run – MSIL, JIT compilation and the Virtual Execution System
  • Application domains and remote objects
  • How garbage collection works

We’ll also bust a few common myths and misconceptions. You can’t code effectively without knowing your platform, so come along and get down to the basics!

This promises to be a great talk on some fundamental skills - a great way to brush up early in 2011.

As I've mentioned before, Ivan is an excellent presenter who makes even complex matters understood - I'd recommend this to anyone who is serious about writing excellent applications.
