Welli.NET: What's Next for .NET Developers?

An exciting start to the year with the Wellington .NET User group as Ivan Towlson presents on all the new stuff coming with Windows 8:

Windows 8 is expected this year, and it's shaping up to be the biggest change since Windows 95. It brings a new shell, the new Metro application model and user interface, the new Windows Runtime, and an aggressive focus on iPad-style consumer devices alongside the traditional desktop or laptop. And along with Windows 8 comes Visual Studio 11, featuring C# 5.0 and .NET 4.5 and support for Metro/Win8 applications.

Scheduled Date:
Wednesday, 25 January 2012 - 6:00pm

Wellington .NET User Group End of Year

'tis the season of festivities - and on Wednesday night the Wellington .NET user group celebrated in true geek style. We started, as usual, with a presentation (details below), and then we retired to a local pub for some insanely hot chicken wings, a couple of drinks, and a geeky story or two.

Dynamic and meta-programming in .NET 4 with Ivan Towlson

Ivan's back, and he's brought his top rating TechEd talk with him. This presentation is pure gold, looking at the new stuff in C# 4 from a multitude of angles, and using it to do things with C# that you wouldn't believe possible. In fact, this talk was the inspiration behind my own "Easier property validation with dynamic in C# 4" blog post.

Scheduled Date:
Wednesday, 5 October 2011 - 6:00pm

Owen's talk on HTML 5

Back on Wednesday August 3rd, Owen Evans gave a talk at the Wellington .NET User group on HTML 5. As usual, Owen gave a great talk. Here's an informal summary of his main points.

WDCNZ

I've got my ticket for WDCNZ - have you got yours?

The impressive schedule of talks is posing a bit of a challenge - which great talk do I go to? A nice problem to have, really.

Caliburn.Micro for Client Apps

Rapid SharePoint Development for Teams using Visual Studio 2010

With apologies for the short notice, you might like to attend this breakfast tomorrow (Friday) morning on Rapid SharePoint Development for Teams using Visual Studio 2010. Here's the blurb:

Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS) is the fully integrated solution to manage projects, giving developers, testers and management a single source of truth for all project needs. Using TFS to develop for SharePoint will make the development and maintenance process much more efficient and effective.

CLR Fundamentals

2010 is getting off to a great start for the Wellington .NET User Group with a presentation on CLR Fundamentals:

Whether you program in C#, Visual Basic or any other .NET language, the Common Language Runtime is what makes your code go. It’s the common platform which provides all the features we take for granted – memory management, program loading, language independence, and so on. In this talk we’ll review the practical fundamentals of the CLR including:

  • Reference and value types – what, when and why
  • Properties, methods, fields and events
Scheduled Date:
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 - 6:00pm

MonoDroid and MonoTouch

The final meeting of the Wellington .NET User group for the year will have Nic Wise over from the UK to talk about mobile development with MonoDroid and MonoTouch.

Mobile devices are the new, hot thing in development, once again.

Wednesday, 15 December 2010 - 6:00pm

Thanks to the Palmy .NET User Group

Many thanks to Colin and the Palmerston North .NET User Group for hosting my presentation last night. Based on the conversations after my talk, it seems you enjoyed my presentation and that most of you had something useful to take away.

The Reactive Extensions Library

On December 1st Ivan Towlson will be giving a presentation on the Reactive Extensions library at the Wellington .NET User Group, should be a great talk.

Ivan is a great presenter, able to present even the most complex subjects in ways that allow the audience to keep up.

I'll update this diary notice with more information as it becomes available. RSVP as usual to Owen.

Scheduled Date:
Wednesday, 1 December 2010 - 6:00pm

XAML to the UI and Beyond

This week's presentation at the Wellington .NET user group looks interesting:

XAML has become a powerful tool for building User Interfaces in WPF, Silverlight and now Windows Phone 7, but how can we leverage this XAML Processing capabilities for ourselves to improve productivity, readability and maintainability? I will show you a few lesser known/used features of the XAML Processor, and an Example of replacing plain old xml with fancy XAML Objects.

See you at Xero, at 6pm Wednesday.

Scheduled Date:
Wednesday, 3 November 2010 - 6:00pm

A User Interface Stack Exchange

Hopefully, you already know about StackOverflow (if you don't, you owe it to yourself to go and check it out right now!).

But did you know that there's a new User Interface Stack Exchange?

Currently (October 2010) still in beta, this site is fast becoming a great place to go for advice on user interface and user interaction design.

PDC Breakfast

The Wellington .NET User Group will be holding a PDC Breakfast to watch a stream of the keynote.

The stream will start at 7:30am and is expected to be finished by 9:30am.

Since 1991, the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference has been the centre of Microsoft’s biggest platform announcements. This year will be no exception and we invite you to join us at your local MS Communities to watch the keynote and highlights from the conference. So, make sure you join your local user group to watch the keynote and highlights from this year's PDC.

5 Languages in 50 minutes

Coming up at the Wellington .NET user group:

Owen Evans presents 5 languages in 50 minutes

David Thomas (of The Pragmatic Programmer fame) promoted that as software developers we should be learning a language a year. They say French is the language of love and Italian is apparently the language of diving gratuitously during football matches.

Well, programming languages all try to serve a purpose and fill a need too (they aren’t all just created for academic curiosity).

Owen Evans, Senior Developer at Xero, takes on the challenge of introducing you to 5 unsung development languages (not .Net languages) in the hope of promoting the idea that we can each pick up something new and learn and evolve as software developers.
The aim is not to be masters but to understand better the ideas different language constructs present to us so we can fold them into the day to day development we undertake as professionals.
5 languages in 50 minutes? its a stretch goal but i think we can make it.

Scheduled Date:
Thursday, 7 October 2010 - 7:00am

DNUG This week: Silverlight in your Hand

I've watched the announcements around Windows 7 Series Mobile with great interest - it strikes me that using Silverlight for the user experience of a new mobile platform is a stroke of genius, as there's a readily available of developers already familiar with the required techniques and patterns.

See you at CodeCamp!

Every year, just before the Microsoft TechEd conference, a Code Camp is held in Auckland.

In past years I've always forgotten about this Code Camp until too late. This year, not only have I managed to arrange my flights and accommodation so I can come along, I've also volunteered to give a presentation.

SLAMD this week: MVVM from the Trenches

This week at the Wellington SiverLight And Mobile Development (SLAMD) usergroup:

Part II of our MVVM presentations: MVVM From the Trenches

Last session we had Andrew Tokeley give a presentation on the theories behind MVVM, why it's the appropriate pattern for Silverlight apps, hence why Microsoft has made it an integral part of Blend, etc.

This session, upon that solid, almost scholastic, foundation, we have Chris Klug chaffing at the bite to report from the trenches how to use MVVM to address real world projects.

He's coming with examples, useful code libraries, experience, and most of all, hard-earned pragmatism.

Chris is a great speaker with a laid back style that belies his depth of knowledge. This promises to be an enjoyable session with plenty to learn - useful for anyone working with Silverlight or WPF.

Time: Thursday 22 July @ 5.45 pm
Location: Xero, Level 1, 98 Customhouse Quay

Please RSVP to skysigal [at] xact-solutions.com for numbers.
