Fighting Spam with Mollom

I have to figure that the spam arriving on this site comes either from a clever automated process or from people who are too dumb to realise their efforts are useless.

To this point, I've worked with moderated comments, but the volume of spam is getting higher than I want to deal with manually.

Enter Mollom - a network based approach to fighting spam.

It'll be interesting to see how well it works.

On Comments and Spam

I've never understood vandals.

A small proportion of the graffiti in any big city can be considered as "urban art" because of the talent and time required for its execution, but most graffiti seems to be worse than useless. Tagging is particularly daft, as the perpetrators are effectively autographing their crime.

Tweaking "Read More"

I've made a small tweak to the display of posts, moving the "Read More" link into a more prominent position, easier to find. Interested in your feedback.

CAPTCHA Fixed

I'm not quite sure how, but the settings for CAPTCHA on comments got dropped, making it impossible for people to post comments. I think it's fixed now - will keep an eye on it over the next few days to be sure.

Apologies for the problems.

Printer Friendly Pages

I've always hated those websites that make it difficult to print out a page, either preventing the print completely, or truncating after one page.

You can imagine my horror when I discovered that my own site was broken in this way - printing didn't work properly from FireFox or Chrome (Internet Explorer was Ok).

I've now installed Printer Friendly Pages to enable easy printing - at the end of every blog post or article is a link to a printer friendly version.

New section - Code

Based on site feedback (and encouragement from a couple of friends), I've added a new top-level area to the site: Code.

The idea is to collect together various code based blog posts in a way that's more accessible for a casual reader.

I'd be interested in your feedback.

Time for a change

I hope you like the new look for the site - I thought it was time for a change.

If you spot anything untoward, please let me know!

Comment Spam

Sorry to say, but the Spammers seem to be winning the war. I've just spent a bunch of holiday time cleaning up a mess caused by someone posting a bunch of spam laden comments.

Effective immediately, all comments posted here will require approval before being published. As always, spam comments will be exterminated with extreme prejudice.

Site Update

Minor update to how the site is arranged - the menu across the top now boasts dropdown selection (give it a try, it's pretty slick), consolidating a few lists of content that were cluttering up my sidebars.

Is that an Ad?

Am I going crazy? Is that an Advert at the top of my site?

Well, yes, it is - but one in a good cause. Legislation is about to go-live here in New Zealand that will force ISPs to disconnect users (whether personal or business) if anyone makes an accusation of copyright infringment. No proof required, no court case, no verification of facts, no redress for false accusations - in otherwords, Guilty unless proved innocent.

Commenting Fixed

CAPTCHA submission for comments is now fixed, thanks to John and Saleh for bringing the problem to my attention.

New Year, New Look

With the arrival of a New Year, I thought it was time to update the look of the site a little. After a couple of weeks effort and tweaking, you can now see the result - hope you like it!

Open for Comments

There's always the possibility that I'll regret doing this, but for the moment, the site is open for comments.

One more time.

Sometimes, the best of intentions come to naught. But, sometimes, the best of intentions leads to the best of results.
